Acalanes High School District consists of four high schools, three of which are located in Lamorinda: Acalanes in Lafayette, Campolindo in Moraga and Miramonte in Orinda. These high schools are fortunate enough to have a district that understands the emotional needs of high schoolers. A Wellness Center has been implemented on each campus at all three Lamorinda high schools. These centers are in collaboration with the existing Counseling Departments and Health Offices and employ an Intake Specialist and Wellness Coordinator. They are open each school day from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm to allow students to take advantage of their vast resources before, after and during school hours. The services provided for students include support groups, referrals to community agencies, nursing, mental health counseling and all of these services are free and, most importantly, confidential. Students may need a place to address such issues as mental health, friendships/relationships, grief/loss, substance use/abuse, LGBTQI/Gender Identity Issues and more. The Wellness Centers are working to address the needs of high school students in a world and learning environment full of emotional stressors. The centers serve as a hub for students to self-refer or be referred by counselors, teachers or parents to obtain resources or information. Students can speak with the In-Take Specialist or Wellness Coordinator to evaluate needs or have time with a school counselor, psychologist, nurse or other school personnel. About Wellness CentersWhy Wellness CentersWellness Counselors also form partnerships with community based organizations to make students aware of their services and to bring some of these organizations on campus. The counselors also report out to the parents and student population in newsletters. They have resources and ideas and let the school community know what has been happening each week at the Wellness Center. Take a peek at the Parents Club Newsletters to get some great resources for your high schooler, parenting strategies and tools to use for the whole family. Prevention and EducationThe driving idea behind the Wellness Centers is prevention and education for all students. The goal is to improve academic and mental health and to help students that are experiencing any emotional issues impeding their ability to learn. The centers are funded through a combined effort of Parents Clubs and Education Foundations. Lamorinda high school students are fortunate to be a part of a community that values education and mental well being...and the balance needed to sustain both.
