Even after the kids have left the nest, Lamorinda is still a wonderful place to live. With a wide range of classes, clubs, and sports geared to seniors, there’s no lack of ways to stay busy, engaged and healthy. Should the time come for more support, many local organizations provide services to assist families in keeping their older members happy, safe and fulfilled.
“Aging in Place” is a community initiative that council members take seriously - for instance, you can contact anyone on the “Senior Services Commission” in the City of Lafayette to dig deeper than the resources pointed out here.

I moved to Lafayette in 1996 from Maxwell Park in Oakland. Our son was about to enter kindergarten and we wanted great schools for him. A large part of how we chose our new community had to do with the schools, but more specifically, music in the schools. Both my husband and I are professional musicians so we understand the value and importance of a thriving music program for child development. This is hard to find, but Lafayette has it!
Where did the days of quickie breakfasts, packed lunches and random dinners between sports practices, dance classes and fast food go? While dreaming of only 4-5 loads of wash per week compared to 12-15, you are now at those smaller wash days and quiet meals and you may have some time to fill! What do you do with all that time that was once a fantasy? Finding friends isn’t as easy as it was when the kids were in school. If you’re moving on top of it, you’re starting fresh.
It can be daunting keeping up with real estate!! It’s water-cooler talk and a headline grabbing topic...but, when faced with buying or selling personally it becomes much more real. If you’re thinking of selling your home but hesitating under a spell of inertia...how do you move forward? How do you know if the time is right and if you will be able to get the price you want? There are so many variables to consider as a seller, so it’s definitely a big task to get started. Of course you can consult a local real estate agent that you trust but for starters, there is research you can do to maximize a smooth and profitable sale, and that begins with education and exposure to the market.
Is downsizing in the near future for you? Have your kids left the nest and you are thinking it’s time to look ahead to a move?
Does it feel too overwhelming to know where to start? Break it down to a 12 MONTH PLAN and minimize the stress with lots of preparation and monthly goals. A step-by-step plan is key to an organized, proactive, stress-free transition...and minimal gray hairs! Many homeowners are in the empty nest stage. Kids have moved out of the family home and the space is more than you need or want to maintain. You’re thinking of downsizing, hoping to avoid expensive updates and renovations, or want to move in closer proximity to family. Any of this sound familiar?
Moving out of a house is overwhelming, but when you add on the thought of possibly parting with some of your personal larger furniture and possessions and unravelling a house full of lifetime memories...unnerving would be the nicest way to describe the task! It’s a scary transition to think about, but you don’t want to have a big regret in 5 years that you were complacent about making a real estate decision. When is the right time to downsize? It should really be termed “smartsize”. There are so many decisions to make and so many factors and unique situations to consider. Where do you see yourself right now and in the near future? Maybe you don’t want your money tied up in a big house or maybe you would like to free up some funds to pursue other dreams like travel. Regardless it’s time to be smart and make a plan for the next chapter. Lamorinda is a creative place. Whether you want to see it, buy it or make it, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the visual arts culture in our charming trio of towns. Don’t let the suburban vibe fool you - there is something interesting to be found with just a tiny bit of effort!
Lamorinda is a great place to be a dog. With spots for sniffing like the Lafayette Moraga Trail, Rancho Laguna Park and the Lafayette Reservoir, as well as the multitude of outdoor restaurants that allow pets on leash, there’s always plenty to keep the canines busy.
One of the reasons people choose to move to Lamorinda is for the spacious, garden friendly backyards. Whether you’ve got a quarter of an acre or ten acres, there’s plenty of room to create your own oasis and loads of nurseries and resources to help you make your outdoor dreams a reality.
