This year’s bird flu has made it hard to find eggs on the shelf and left us gazing longingly at our neighbor’s hens. Before you get all foxy and start stealing from other people’s coops, consider laying in some chickens of your own. The hobby of raising hens has become a popular and productive suburban pastime with many AVID chicken parents in Lafayette, Orinda and Moraga.

Lamorinda’s biggest initial draw is the family-friendly reputation from the school system that has been carefully cultivated over the years to nurture kids; protect property values and enhance the community. After that, families know that they will have some room to roam, parks to explore and a community culture that isn’t as easy to find in more urban environments. The overarching draw is the forever home and a place to raise kids (for a huge percentage of the people migrating in). A natural extension of this child-forward attitude is many, many family friendly events to choose from. Annual attractions abound and the holidays are no exception.
In the entryway, a pile of mail sits unopened. The kids’ clothes are strewn across the floor of their bedrooms. A basket of laundry awaits folding in the living room. From the kitchen, the dishwasher beeps incessantly. How are you supposed to get any work done surrounded by all these undone chores?
Coffee shops are great, but in our friendly community, you’re bound to run into so many people you know sipping their lattes, it could be hours before you find enough peace and quiet to finish a project or even make it through your inbox. Fortunately, you don’t have to go far to find a co-working space that suits your style. With complimentary coffee, fast, free WIFI and your choice of private offices or comfy couches, once you settle in, you’ll never want to go home again. Plastic pollution, deforestation, climate change, oh my! All things we can no longer ignore if we want to protect our planet for future generations.
Now, San Francisco may have Rainbow Grocery for the ultimate zero waste shopping experience. It also has Credo Beauty for clean skincare with sustainable packaging. And let’s not forget all the second-hand stores. But the East Bay makes it just as easy to reduce your environmental footprint, if not easier! Lamorinda is a creative place. Whether you want to see it, buy it or make it, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the visual arts culture in our charming trio of towns. Don’t let the suburban vibe fool you - there is something interesting to be found with just a tiny bit of effort!
Lamorinda is a great place to be a dog. With spots for sniffing like the Lafayette Moraga Trail, Rancho Laguna Park and the Lafayette Reservoir, as well as the multitude of outdoor restaurants that allow pets on leash, there’s always plenty to keep the canines busy.
