For many of us, our childhood years and high school careers were filled with competitive sports. Whether we ran cross country, played baseball, swam the butterfly or hurled the shotput, our bodies were in near constant motion. Then came the desk decades, with a little hiking or biking on the weekends, maybe some pick-up basketball or early mornings at the gym.
But now, watching the kids out on the field as they battle the competition, we find ourselves longing to once again be part of a team. Here in Lamorinda, there are plenty of options for grown-ups who want to play like a kid again.

Getting Out on the FieldYour five year old is bouncing off the walls. Time to find a positive way to channel all that energy. Fortunately here in Lamorinda, it’s never too early to get them running up and down the field, a win for both the kids and you. Sports are a big part of life, with many a weekend spent on the sidelines chatting with other parents and cheering on your favorite contender. Don’t miss out! Getting a spot on the team can often mean getting online months before the season to ensure your child gets a chance to toss, kick or carry that ball.
When you have pre-swimmers or young kids (or just need a change of pace), a splash pad is an excellent change of pace from the pool, the park or the average playdate. Locally, Moraga Commons provides parents with an easy-to-access splash pad that’s conveniently located (with super easy parking!) at the intersections of St. Mary’s Road and Moraga Way.
Found some free time and want to get outside? The Lafayette Reservoir (the “Rez”) a repuation as Lafayette’s favorite meeting spot. Meeting a friend? “The Rez”, going for a jog? “The Rez”, want to get in a killer workout (upper rim!)? “The Rez” Mommy stroller time? “The Rez”.
Usually referred to simply as “The Rez,” it includes a large basin of water and a number of paths and trails to explore. The water is bordered by a paved path that is about three miles, but there are hiking options for a longer walk. People bring their dogs, families, and bikes to exercise here, but don’t be fooled: there is lots more to this place than going around in a circle! Cycling is a big sport anywhere you go. In one form or another, people love to ride. While different places are often best suited towards one form of riding or another, one thing is for sure: people don’t want to give up the pedal. Between mountain biking and road cycling; road reigns supreme - and studio cycling exists in abundance but the Peloton is gaining traction as more and more people realize that a dynamic workout can be had in their living room or garage.
Even after the kids have left the nest, Lamorinda is still a wonderful place to live. With a wide range of classes, clubs, and sports geared to seniors, there’s no lack of ways to stay busy, engaged and healthy. Should the time come for more support, many local organizations provide services to assist families in keeping their older members happy, safe and fulfilled.
“Aging in Place” is a community initiative that council members take seriously - for instance, you can contact anyone on the “Senior Services Commission” in the City of Lafayette to dig deeper than the resources pointed out here. I moved to Lafayette in 1996 from Maxwell Park in Oakland. Our son was about to enter kindergarten and we wanted great schools for him. A large part of how we chose our new community had to do with the schools, but more specifically, music in the schools. Both my husband and I are professional musicians so we understand the value and importance of a thriving music program for child development. This is hard to find, but Lafayette has it!
Where did the days of quickie breakfasts, packed lunches and random dinners between sports practices, dance classes and fast food go? While dreaming of only 4-5 loads of wash per week compared to 12-15, you are now at those smaller wash days and quiet meals and you may have some time to fill! What do you do with all that time that was once a fantasy? Finding friends isn’t as easy as it was when the kids were in school. If you’re moving on top of it, you’re starting fresh.
It can be daunting keeping up with real estate!! It’s water-cooler talk and a headline grabbing topic...but, when faced with buying or selling personally it becomes much more real. If you’re thinking of selling your home but hesitating under a spell of inertia...how do you move forward? How do you know if the time is right and if you will be able to get the price you want? There are so many variables to consider as a seller, so it’s definitely a big task to get started. Of course you can consult a local real estate agent that you trust but for starters, there is research you can do to maximize a smooth and profitable sale, and that begins with education and exposure to the market.
